Cadets among 26 people killed in Ukraine military plane crash

A total of 26 people, most of them air cadets, have been killed in a military plane crash in Ukraine. Footage of the crash released by officials on social media showed the smouldering remains of the Antonov-26 transport plane. Most of the dead were students of the Kharkiv National Air Force University, the air force said in a statement. There were 27 people on board, 20 cadets and seven crew. On Saturday, the death toll rose after three more bodies were found under the charred remains of the plane and one of the two survivors died in hospital from extensive burns. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described the crash as a "terrible tragedy". "We are urgently creating a commission to investigate all the circumstances and causes of the tragedy," he wrote on Facebook. Mr Zelensky visited the only remaining survivor in a military hospital in Kharkiv, posting a picture of the 20-year-old cadet lying in bed with a bandaged head and right arm. Doug Collins to Introduce Constitutional Amendment Prohibiting Adding Justices to Supreme Court

Representative Doug Collins is preparing to introduce a constitutional amendment to block potential attempts to add justices to the Supreme Court as some Democrats eye adding seats should President Trump's upcoming nominee be confirmed. The amendment would block "court packing," or adding justices to the Supreme Court, for 10 years after any bill is passed to enlarge the court, a measure Collins said aims to "take the political emotion of the moment out of the way."“The proposed amendment—really, it should be a bipartisan issue," the Georgia Republican said. "We should not have decisions like packing the court to be based on emotional or political decisions.""The reason we did it is because it seems like the Democrats, every time they don’t get what they want, they want to change the rules," Collins added.Several Democrats have suggested or said directly that they are open to adding justices to the Court should President Trump's propo...

European Union refuses to recognise Belarusian president following dubious vote and police violence

The European Union in a rare show of unity on Thursday said that it won’t recognise Alexander Lukashenko as the legitimate leader of Belarus. Mr Lukashenko's landslide victory in August's rigged vote sparked protests that were reignited on Wednesday after Mr Lukashenko, who has ruled Belarus for 26 years, held a clandestine swearing-in ceremony. Mr Lukashenko’s security forces led a ferocious crackdown on opposition protests in the days following the elections. Hundreds of people have reported injuries, torture or mistreatment at the hands of law enforcement. The EU’s diplomatic chief said in a statement on Thursday that the ceremony and “the new mandate claimed by Alexander Lukashenko lack any democractic legitimacy.” “This ‘inauguration’ directly contradicts the will of large parts of the Belarusian population, as expressed in numerous, unprecedented and peaceful protests since the elections, and serves to only further deepen the political crisis in Belarus.” The tough stance...

Protesters Confront Armed Militia in Louisville

LOUISVILLE—Protests over prosecutors failing to indict any cops for the March killing of 26-year-old Breonna Taylor flared up again here Thursday, even as the city was still picking up the pieces from an explosive night of violence and unrest.Less than 24 hours after Attorney General Daniel Cameron, a conservative Trump ally, declined to charge officers for fatally shooting Taylor, a Black emergency medical worker, during a botched attempt to serve a warrant, activists were out in force in Jefferson Square Park.Dozens cheered as protesters were released from a side door at the Department of Corrections adjacent the square—over 100 were arrested a night earlier—to chants of “You can’t stop the revolution,” and “Whose streets? Our streets” in call and reply. In addition to trademark of police brutality protests in recent months like massarrests and pepper-spray being dispersed on activists, the Wednesday unrest in Louisville was marked by the non-fatal shooting of two officers. GOP Sen. Cory Gardner stayed mum on meatpacking coronavirus outbreaks as he received industry donations

Some of the biggest and most deadly COVID-19 outbreaks in the U.S. stemmed from the meatpacking industry. But Sen. Cory Gardner (R-Colo.) was reluctant to call for accountability, including when it came to a Colorado-based plant Gardner received donations from, Business Insider reports.Early in the pandemic, meatpacking factories' close quarters became home to massive COVID-19 outbreaks throughout the country. An outbreak at the JBS meatpacking plant in Greeley, Colorado led to at least 291 confirmed cases and six deaths — the biggest localized outbreak in the state. Sen. Michael Bennet (D-Colo.) explicitly called for an investigation at the facility, as did a JBS employee union, which called out Gardner for failing to provide promised coronavirus tests for workers. But Gardner wouldn't discuss the situation with Business Insider, and similarly avoided questions about JBS in a local radio interview.Throughout his Senate career, Gardner has been one of the top recipients of dona...
